PAYOFF IN THE PACIFIC

President Truman declared "We will gain the inevitable triumph so help us God." America was to lose many men to Japan before the tide turned in its favor. The feeling of isolation and the constant oppressive jungle itself was a formidable enemy. The battle of Leyte Gulf was the greatest naval battle in history.

OKINAWA

Fourteen hundred ships took part to soften the island's defenses before the actual invasion. The big guns of hundreds of ships pounded the defenses of Okinawa. As the landing crews went ashore they met with no resistance.

THE FLEET THAT CAME TO STAY

This was the greatest concentration of ships and men in history. Japanese Kamikaze planes dove out of the sky in their attempt to destroy our battleships. The Japanese paid the price with their air force, as they lost 4,232 planes.

THE FORMAL JAPANESE SURRENDER

President Truman and Prime Minister Churchill demanded that Japan surrender or be totally destroyed. America had developed a new fearful weapon, the atomic bomb. On August 6th, 1945 the allies received an unconditional surrender of Japan. On Sunday September 2nd, 1945, both the Japanese delegation and General MacArthur signer the Instrument of Surrender officially ending the war.
