Horace Rumpole (Leo McKern) is a down-at-heel yet brilliant barrister. Fond of quoting Wordsworth, he comes to the defence of shoplifting vicars, overly amorous teachers and many others who pass through the doors of the Old Bailey. He is famed for always winning his cases but there is one person who he has never beaten - his wife "She Who Must Be Obeyed".
