The drought has been broken. For the first time since 1964, the Melbourne Football Club are Premiers, hoisting the coveted AFL Premiership Cup after a 57-year wait, and celebrating an incredible season with generations of Demons fans.
The Demons' dominance in 2021 started from the back, where the twin towers of Steven May and Jake Lever led a watertight defence, transitioning through a midfield engine running on the high- octane footy of ball magnets Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver, while in the forward line, Bayley Fritsch came of age as a goalkicker alongside livewire Kysaiah Pickett, key tall Tom McDonald and a rejuvenated Ben Brown, who all made vital contributions throughout the season. And in the ruck, inspirational skipper Max Gawn led from the front all year without peer. A dramatic goal after the siren from Gawn in Round 23 sealed the Minor Premiership for the Demons, and set the tone for a near-perfect Finals campaign. The Brisbane Lions were clinically dissected in a Qualifying Final at the Adelaide Oval, leading to a Preliminary Final at Optus Stadium against a seasoned Geelong Cats outfit. But the Demons were never headed in the West, racing out of the gate in a performance for the ages, which included a bag of five goals from Gawn, four of which came in the third quarter alone. It set up a mouth-watering Grand Final against the Western Bulldogs, who were riding their own fairy-tale run to the 2021 decider. And in an historic twilight Grand Final at Optus Stadium in Perth, the Demons capped off a sensational season in a stirring victory over the Bulldogs, with coach Simon Goodwin's men heading back to Melbourne with the club's first flag in over half a century.
