Original Harley-Davidson Panhead is the most complete resource available on Harley's classic Big Twins.

The Panhead survived perhaps, more major changes than any other Harley-Davidson model.

Originally introduced in 1948, the Panhead was in many ways an updated version of the classic Knucklehead, Harley's original overhead-valve Big Twin, introduced in 1936. The new bike retained the Knucklehead's old-fashioned springer fork and rigid frame, and from a distance did not look dissimilar to its predecessor.

But one look at the new engine that gave the Panhead its name, and fans knew they were eyeing something special. While the bottom end of the engine featured only minor changes, the top end was completely new. The new overhead-valve powerplant featured hydraulic lifters that never needed adjusting. along with a new aluminum head. This was topped off by an enclosing valve cover that kept all the oil inside the engine (and off the rider's legs!). It was the pie-pan shape of this cover that gave the new engine its name.

But a new engine was just the beginning of the changes. A year after receiving the state-of-the-art new engine, Harley's Big Twin received a new front suspension. Hydraulically damped telescopic forks finally replaced the long-lived springer units. This led to the Panhead earning its official name, Hydra-Glide. In 1958, the Big Twin received a matching sprung suspension in the back, signaling the end of the factory-produced rigid-framed motorcycle. The Panhead was now known as the Duo-Glide. In 1965, Harley brought its Big Twin up to world standards once again by giving it an electric starter, resulting in the fabled Electra Glide.

The Electra Glide marked the final iteration of the

Panhead, which was replaced in 1966 by the Shovelhead, but the much-loved Panhead lived on.

First it was adopted by customizers, and it also became the motorcycle of choice for anyone building a chopper.

Later-model original Panheads became sought after, and many chopped examples were restored to original condition. Today, Panheads in all forms, from the original rigid-framed, springer-forked model of 1948 to the final 1965 Electra Glide, are some of the most desirable of all classic Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Whether you are a collector, restorer, or simply an admirer of these historic motorcycles, this comprehensive book is a must-have for any Harley enthusiast.
