Having just arrived home from an extended stay in Australia with their son, Hetty barely has time to unpack before she is called upon to search for buried treasure, hidden deep in a Cumbrian mine.

Hetty's strong sense of justice, kindly disposition and skill at blending into her surroundings bring her into contact with people from all walks of life: a miner's widow; the bitter heir of a wealthy man; an OAP fighting against council corruption; a hairdresser whose husband has been assaulted; smugglers; and, an old flame of Robert's brother, Frank.
