The famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is in Paris, enjoying the fine food and modern art. But when Madame Giselle, a wealthy French woman, is murdered on Poirot's flight back to London, pleasure turns to business.

Poirot and his old friend Chief Inspector Japp are swiftly on the case, aided by air stewardess Jane Grey. But the situation becomes yet more complicated when a woman claiming to be the illegitimate daughter of Madame Giselle presents herself to the French police – before promptly disappearing.
